The honest version.

Why I build on it.

Every platform's own website will tell you it's the best one. Here's my reasoning instead, from running client sites on this one and fixing plenty built on the others.

You can actually use it.

This is the one that matters and the one nobody leads with. A client can change a price, swap a photograph or add an opening hour themselves, on a phone, without breaking the design and without paying me to do it. Most platforms promise that. This one delivers it.
Nothing to keep updated.

No plugins to update, no theme that stops being supported, no morning where the site is down because two extensions fell out overnight. The platform is maintained underneath you. That removes an entire category of problem that small businesses shouldn't have to think about.
Real design control.

Studio isn't the old drag and drop Wix. It's a proper responsive design tool with a grid, breakpoints and reusable components, which is what lets a site be designed rather than assembled. Nothing built in it has to look like a template unless somebody chose a template.
The SEO controls are all there.

Page titles, descriptions, headings, alt text, redirects, sitemap, robots, and custom structured data. Everything I need to build a site properly for search is available without a plugin. What it can't do is the thinking, which is the part that actually moves rankings.
One bill, no surprises.

Hosting, security, SSL and backups are in the price. No separate hosting invoice, no premium plugin licences renewing at odd times of year, no "your SSL expired" email on a Sunday. For a small business, predictable beats theoretically cheaper.
It's yours.

The account is in your name and you keep it. If you ever want to work with somebody else, you remove me and carry on. I've never understood designers who hold the keys, and it tends to tell you something about how confident they are you'll stay.

Wix Studio or WordPress?

The question I get asked most, usually by somebody who has been told WordPress is what serious businesses use. It depends entirely on the business, so here's the honest split rather than a table designed to reach one answer.

Where Wix Studio wins

For most small businesses.

If your site is a shop window that needs to be found, look right and take enquiries, this is the easier road.

Nothing to maintain no plugin updates, no theme going stale
Hosting and security included one bill, and someone else's job
You can edit it yourself without a call to me first
Nothing extra to buy forms, booking, blog and store are built in
It can't fall over from a bad update because you're not applying any

Where WordPress wins

When the site is the product.

I build in WordPress too, and there are jobs where it's plainly the right answer.

Genuinely custom functionality things a platform was never meant to do
Hundreds or thousands of pages where content scale is the whole job
Publishing at volume multiple authors, editorial workflow
You want the files themselves full control, and the upkeep that comes with it
An existing WordPress team no sense moving away from what works

The real question isn't which platform is better. It's who's going to look after it in eighteen months. WordPress in the hands of somebody who maintains it is excellent. WordPress abandoned is the most common wreck I get asked to look at.

The thing you've been told.

"Wix sites can't rank on Google."

You'll hear this, usually from somebody who sells WordPress. It was fair comment about a decade ago and it hasn't been true for years.

Google has said plainly that it doesn't rank platforms, it ranks pages. What decides position is structure, speed, content and the local signals around your business. A badly built site ranks badly on any platform, and I've seen enough WordPress sites with no headings, no titles and a 6MB hero image to be sure of it.

What's true is that a site built carelessly on any builder will struggle. Templates dropped in without a thought for structure, pages that all target the same thing, no schema, no plan. That's not the platform, that's the build.

The version worth judging me on: ask me on a call to show you a Wix Studio site of mine ranking for a competitive local term, and where it sits across the map. Then go and check it yourself. That's a more useful answer than either of us arguing about platforms.

Being straight about it.

When I wouldn't recommend it.

A page that says a platform is right for everybody is an advert. These are the cases where I'd tell you to go elsewhere, and I'd rather say so before you've paid me.

You need something genuinely bespoke.

Custom software, a members system with unusual logic, an integration with a piece of trade software nobody has heard of. There's a point where a platform stops helping and starts getting in the way, and I'll tell you when you've reached it.
You're publishing at scale.

Hundreds of articles, several writers, an editorial process. That's what WordPress was built for and it's still very good at it.
You already have a WordPress site that works.

If it's maintained, fast and bringing in work, moving platform gains you nothing and risks what you have. I'd rather tell you that than sell you a rebuild.
You want the files on your own server.

Some businesses need that, usually for a reason they already know about. Wix is a hosted platform, so if that's a requirement it's the wrong fit and there's no arguing round it.

What people ask about Wix.

Can a Wix site rank on Google?

Yes, and Google has said plainly that it ranks pages rather than platforms. Structure, speed, content and your local signals decide it.

The reason the myth persists is that a lot of Wix sites are built by their owners in an evening, with no heading structure and no plan. That's the build, not the platform. Ask me to show you one of mine ranking for a competitive local search and check it yourself.

Do you only build on Wix?

No. It's what I recommend for most small businesses and it's what most of my clients are on, but I build in WordPress as well when the job calls for it.

The platform should follow the work rather than the other way round. If I think you'd be better served elsewhere I'll say so on the first call, which is a cheaper time to find out than after the build.

Do I own the site, or do you?

You do. The account is in your name, the domain stays yours, and you can remove my access whenever you like.

Be careful of anyone who won't do that. A designer holding the keys to your website is holding your business, and it's usually a sign they're worried about you leaving.

Can I update it myself afterwards?

Yes, and that's most of the reason I use it. Text, photographs, prices, opening hours, new blog posts, all editable without touching the design and without needing me.

Content is one thing, the design is another. Moving sections about, changing type sizes or dragging things around can break the layout on screen sizes you're not looking at, and it can undo the structure the site's search visibility depends on. Putting that right afterwards is chargeable, because I'm rebuilding something rather than maintaining it. If you want a design change, ask me. It's usually quicker and always cheaper than unpicking it.

I'll show you what's safe to change at launch. Plenty of clients never touch it and use the maintenance plan instead, which is fine too. The point is that it's your choice rather than a dependency.

What does Wix cost on top of the build?

There's a platform subscription, which covers hosting, security, SSL and backups. The plan depends on what the site needs to do, and I'll tell you which one before you commit rather than after.

Worth comparing honestly against WordPress, where hosting, a security service, backups and premium plugins are separate bills that arrive at different times of year. Cheaper on paper, rarely cheaper by the end of it.

Can you move my existing Wix site off a template?

I don't patch existing sites, including Wix ones. I build new, on proper foundations.

Most sites that need rescuing have problems in the structure rather than the surface, and working round somebody else's decisions costs you more than starting properly. If you're already on Wix, the good news is your content and your account come with you.

Should I choose Wix Studio or WordPress?

For most small businesses, Wix Studio. There's nothing to maintain, nothing to update on a Tuesday night because a plugin has a security hole, and you can change a price or an opening time yourself without breaking anything. That's not a compromise, it's the right answer for a business that wants a website rather than a project.

WordPress is the answer when you want to own the files outright, when the site has to do something a hosted platform won't, or when you already have one and it's working. I build on both, so I've no reason to talk you into either. Web design in WordPress sets out where it earns its keep.

The honest version is that the platform matters far less than most people expect. Structure, speed, content and local signals decide whether you get found, and all four are things I do rather than things the platform does.
